The Visitor Analytics addon tells you who is on your website, where they came from and what they read. It counts visits on your own server, so it needs no Google account and no extra script on your pages, and it keeps working when an ad blocker hides Google Analytics.

It is for the owner who wants to know whether the Facebook post brought anyone, which service page people actually read, and whether visitors come on their phones (most do).

Switching it on

Visitor Analytics is a premium addon, so it has to be in your licence first.

  1. Buy it with Buy this addon on its card on Admin → Addons. When the order is confirmed, the key comes down by itself at the next licence check; Collect purchases now under License → Addon keys fetches it at once. The addon is normally switched on as it arrives.
  2. A key you got some other way goes in the Addon key box under License → Addon keys. Paste it and press Add the key.
  3. If its card on Admin → Addons still says Disabled, press Enable.

Visits are counted from the moment the addon is switched on. Earlier traffic cannot be filled in.

Where to find it

The sidebar heading Visitor Analytics Addons holds:

  • Visitors: the whole picture for a period.
  • Live Now: who is on the site at this moment.
  • Visit Log: every page view, one line each.
  • Settings: the addon's settings.

The permissions, in the Visitors group under Roles & Permissions, are See visitor analytics and Change the settings and clear the log.

What is counted, and what is not

  • People are counted once, however many pages they open. A returning visitor is recognised by a scrambled code made from their connection and browser, not by their name or a cookie.
  • Visits are sittings: one person reading three pages in one go is one visit and three page views. A visit with a single page counts as Bounced.
  • Bots (Google, Bing, Facebook's link preview, uptime checkers and many others) are recognised and kept apart, so they do not inflate your figures.
  • Your own staff, signed in to the panel, are not counted unless you switch that on.

Visitors

The filter bar at the top sets the period (the last 30 days to start with, or any two dates), and can narrow the figures to one source (Direct, Search, Social, Referral, Campaign, Internal), one device (Desktop, Mobile, Tablet), or a page whose address contains a word. Hide bots, Include bots or Bots only decides what happens to bots. Press Show; Clear resets the filter. A button beside the filter shows how many are on the site now.

The screen then shows:

Tracking a campaign

Add ?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=hearing-camp to the address you share, for example https://your-site.com/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=hearing-camp. Everybody who arrives through that link is counted as Campaign, with the campaign name, so you can see exactly what one post or one SMS brought in.

Live Now

Live Now lists everybody who opened a page in the last few minutes: the page they are reading now, the page they came in on, where they came from, their device and browser, how many pages they have read and when they were last seen. It refreshes on its own every 20 seconds; Refresh now does it at once.

Below it, Bots, recently lists the bots that called, with their last page and number of hits.

The dashboard shows On the site now and Visitors today (people, not page views).

Visit Log

Visit Log lists every page view with when it happened, the page, where the visitor came from, the device, browser and system. It takes the same filters as Visitors. Export CSV downloads what the filter shows.

Housekeeping at the bottom clears old entries: choose Remove visits older than a year, six months, three months, a month or everything, the whole log, and press Remove them. The cron job already removes anything older than the setting below; this is for clearing test traffic.

Settings

SettingWhat it does
Store the full IP addressOff by default. The scrambled code is enough to recognise a returning visitor, and a log of who read what is not something to keep casually.
Count your own staff as visitorsLeave it off, or your own testing dominates the figures.
Keep visits for (days)365 by default. 0 keeps them for ever. The cron job clears the rest.
Count as "on the site now" for (minutes)How recent a page view must be to count as live. 5 by default.

A monthly check

  1. Open Visitors for last month.
  2. Look at Where they came from. If Search is small, write articles (Blog & Articles) answering the questions patients ask.
  3. Look at Where they land first and make sure those pages have a clear phone number and a booking button.
  4. Compare When they come with your opening hours, and consider AI Live Chat for the evenings.

Tips

  • Leave Store the full IP address off unless you have a reason. The figures are just as good without it.
  • Use a different utm_campaign for every post or SMS you want to measure.
