The Script & Addon Updates addon updates the script straight from the License Center, in one click, without a zip file or an FTP program. Before a single file is replaced, it takes a full backup of the site and sends it to the License Center, so there is always a copy from moments before the update.
It is for every owner who would rather not update by hand. Telling people to back up before updating does not work; most do not. This addon does it for you, and the update will not go ahead without it.
Switching it on
Script & Addon Updates is a premium addon, so it must be in your licence.
- Buy it from its card on Admin → Addons (Buy this addon), or on the License Center at https://license.faruk.bd. A paid order arrives by itself at the next licence check.
- If you have the key already, open License, paste it under Addon keys and press Add the key. Check now asks the License Center at once.
- Press Enable on the Script & Addon Updates Addons card.
If the addon is switched on but the licence does not carry it, its screen only says This module is switched on, but the licence does not carry it yet.
Settings
Admin → Addons → Settings on the card.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Look for updates once a day | On by default. Check for updates on the Updates screen asks at any time. |
Once a check has found a newer version, the dashboard shows Update available with the new version number and you are on your current one.
The Updates screen
More → Updates.
This installation shows your version, for example v1.0.0, and one of:
- Nobody has asked the licence server yet.
- You are on the newest version.
- Version ... is available. You are on ..., followed by What changed: the release notes.
Under it, Last asked says when the License Center was last asked, and Check for updates asks it now.
When an update is available, the Before you press this box explains what will happen, with the Back up and update now button.
Modules lists the addons the License Center has releases for, with the Available version, a newer badge when it is newer than yours, and the date Released.
On the right, Your last backup shows when the last pre-update backup was Taken, its Size, and that it is Kept On the licence server. How an update runs repeats the five steps below.
How an update runs
- Your whole site and database are packed up: every table and your uploads.
- That package is sent to the License Center.
- Only then does the License Center hand over the update. This is deliberate: it refuses to send an update until your backup has arrived.
- The new files are written. Your
config.php,.htaccessanduploadsfolder are never touched. - You run the database update to finish.
Updating, step by step
- Open More → Updates and press Check for updates.
- Read What changed.
- Press Back up and update now and confirm. On a large site this takes a few minutes. Do not close the page while it is running.
- What happened lists each step with a tick or a cross: Taking a backup of this site, Backup made, the backup sent, Update downloaded., and how many files were updated.
- Press Run the database update. It adds whatever the new version needs to the database (see Updating). Until it has run, every page answers that a database update is needed.
If any step shows a cross, nothing after it happened. A failed backup or a failed upload of the backup means no file was replaced.
If something goes wrong
Open a support ticket from License (Contact the script author). The backup from moments before the update is on the License Center and can be put straight back. Quote the date shown under Your last backup when you ask.
Tips
- The server needs PHP's zip support to unpack an update. Without it, the screen says so; update by hand as described in Updating.
- Pick a quiet hour. Staff working during the update may see a page fail for a moment.
- The backup this addon takes is for support to restore. For your own backups on a schedule, with copies to Google Drive or FTP, use Backup & Restore.
- Press Check for updates now and then, or when the License Center tells you a new version is out.
